UKMT – the home of the national Maths Challenges which our students have participated in for over 20 years

Year 7 maths setting and general information

As soon as the students start in September they will be set for maths by their KS2 SAT levels.  We regularly review our setting, acknowledging that students make progress at different speeds and stages, and set changes are made when appropriate.  Please note that set changes are at the discretion of the class teacher in consultation with the head of department.

The setting structure in Year 7 is as follows:

XA and YA are parallel sets (same-ability) etc.  Also, there is no difference in ability profile between sets D and E.

Once the students are set, maths homework will be set as weekly tasks on www.mymaths.co.uk.  The tasks will be set electronically and the students will be shown how to access these with their own login and password.  They will also have reminders on Show My Homework.  Please do get involved with the homework; talk to your child about the tasks and keep an eye on the progress they make.  Any help you give them is always much appreciated.  We also run a maths homework club every Monday 3.10 – 4.10 in A106.

Maths Evening, thursday 2 November 2017

If you want to know more about how we use the mymaths website, including how you can check on your child’s progress and how we teach arithmetic methods, we will be running our usual parents’ maths evening in school (Thursday 2 November 2017) in the assembly hall.  All parents of Year 7's, with or without their children, are welcome.

Students are assessed in class throughout the year with an assessment each half term.  Your child’s reports will tell you how they are progressing towards their target.

We require that all students bring 7 pieces of equipment to every maths lesson.  They are:

  • Pens (blue/black and purple)
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • scientific calculator (Casio fx85 GT, available from LRC)
  • exercise book (provided)
  • iPad (charged!)

If you have any maths queries, please contact Mr Pyle, Director of Maths, on mpyle@wardenpark.co.uk
